Barren River Boat Rentals at the State Dock

Barren River boat rentals from Rubright Marinas are run from Barren River State Dock in Lucas, Kentucky. Because the dock is located within Barren River Lake State Resort Park, visitors can rent a pontoon or a fishing boat for the day without owning a boat, hauling a trailer or knowing the lake in advance.

The state dock is the one location in our group that rents boats. Our Old Hickory Lake marinas in Gallatin and Mount Juliet, and Peninsula across the lake near Glasgow, concentrate on storage, fuel and their stores. If you want to rent, this is the place to call.

Barren River Lake boat rentals: pick the right boat

You can rent two kinds of boat here: pontoons and fishing boats. The right choice depends on who is coming and what you want out of the day.

Pontoons for families and groups

A pontoon is a flat, wide deck on two or three tubes. It is steady underfoot, has plenty of seating and room for a cooler, and is forgiving at low speed, which makes it the easy choice for families, mixed ages and anyone driving a boat for the first time. It is ideal for cruising the main lake, anchoring in a cove for lunch and swimming off the back.

Fishing boats for anglers

A fishing boat is lower and more nimble. It lets you slip into the shallow creek arms and work along standing timber and rocky banks where bass and crappie hold. It has less room to lounge, but if a full live well is the goal, it is the better tool.

The state dock team can talk you through what is available for your date, how many people each boat can carry and the day rates. Call Barren River State Dock at 270-646-2357.

Booking Barren River boat rentals

Summer is busy. From Memorial Day to Labor Day, and especially on Saturdays and holiday weekends, boats can be fully booked a week or more ahead. Call as early as you can once your dates are set.

Weekdays and the spring and fall shoulder seasons are much easier, and short notice bookings often work. Have your date, a rough start time and the size of your group ready when you call. Group size usually settles the choice between a pontoon and a fishing boat.

When you book, ask what time boats go out and when they are due back, and plan to arrive a little early so there is time for the walkthrough before you leave the dock.

The state dock is open from mid April to mid October. This year’s opening and closing days are listed on our marina hours page.

Do you need a Kentucky boating license?

What most people call a Kentucky boating license is a boater education certificate. Kentucky requires one for anyone born on or after January 1, 1984 who operates a motorboat of ten horsepower or more. The course can be completed online in an evening, so if you need it, finish it before your trip.

Bring photo ID and your certificate to the dock, because rental staff will check both. If you have never driven a boat before, tell the team when you book. They will spend time showing you the controls, how the boat turns and stops, where the no wake areas are and how the day’s forecast looks.

Every person aboard needs a life jacket. Kentucky also says children under twelve must have theirs on while any boat shorter than twenty six feet is moving.

Planning your day on Barren River Lake

The lake was created by Barren River Dam and is run by the Army Corps of Engineers. Its water covers close to ten thousand acres, edged by around 140 miles of bank, and much of that shore is park and Corps land with no houses at all. Compared with the busy Cumberland River lakes in Tennessee, it feels open and calm, which is why so many visitors make the drive.

Anglers come for crappie, catfish, bluegill, white bass and largemouth. The water level changes through the year, and fish move with it, so ask at the dock where things have been biting lately. A lake map, or a phone map with the coves marked, makes the trip back to the dock easier at the end of the day. If swimming is on the plan, anchor in a sheltered cove away from the main channel, turn the engine off before anyone gets in, and keep life jackets on children and weaker swimmers.

Pack sunscreen, water, towels, a cooler and a dry bag for phones. Check the forecast before you set out, since summer thunderstorms can build quickly in the afternoon. The driver must stay sober: boating under the influence breaks Kentucky law in the same way drunk driving does.

Fuel and supplies at the Barren River state park marina

As a Barren River state park marina, the dock serves rental customers and visiting boaters alike. It has a fuel dock selling the same ethanol free fuel as our other marinas, and a store with ice, drinks, snacks, sunscreen and required safety equipment, so you can pick up anything you forgot before heading out.

Make a weekend of it at Barren River Lake State Resort Park

Around the marina, the park offers lodge rooms, cottages, campsites, golf and hiking trails. Many renters build a weekend around the boat rather than a single afternoon. Rooms and campsites are reserved through the state park, not through us.

Thinking of keeping a boat here?

If a day on the water turns into plans to buy, both of our Kentucky marinas offer slips. The state dock keeps you close to the park and open water. Peninsula Marina near Glasgow is smaller and calmer, aimed at owners who keep their boat there year round. Our boat storage page compares every option.

Getting to the state dock

Lucas is about thirty five minutes east of Bowling Green and around twenty five minutes from Glasgow. From Nashville, plan on roughly an hour and fifteen minutes heading north. From Louisville, allow about an hour and forty five minutes driving south.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a boating certificate to rent?

Yes, if your birth date is January 1, 1984 or later and the boat has ten horsepower or more. Kentucky wants that boater education card, so pack it with your photo ID.

How early should I reserve a summer weekend?

As soon as your plans are firm. Weekends between Memorial Day and Labor Day fill first, while weekdays and spring or fall dates often have boats available at short notice.

Is there a rental on Old Hickory Lake?

No. Rentals happen only at our Kentucky state dock. On Old Hickory Lake our two locations focus on storage, fuel and supplies.

I have never driven a boat. Can I still rent?

Yes. Let the team know when you book, and they will walk you through the controls and the lake before you leave the dock.

Where can I stay nearby?

The park lodge, cottages and campground are a short distance from the dock. Book them directly with Barren River Lake State Resort Park.
