The quieter side of Barren River Lake
Peninsula Marina joined Rubright Marinas in 2019 and it is the smaller and quieter of our two operations on Barren River Lake. That is not a limitation, it is the reason a lot of owners choose it.
Where Barren River State Dock sits inside the state resort park and handles a steady flow of rentals and day visitors through summer, Peninsula is built around people who keep a boat here. The car park is not full of trailers on a Saturday. The dock is not queued.

Barren River Lake
Barren River Lake covers roughly 10,000 acres with about 140 miles of shoreline, formed by Barren River Dam and managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. The Corps draws the lake down through winter to hold flood capacity and brings it back up in spring, which is why lake levels move seasonally rather than staying fixed.
Most of the shoreline is undeveloped, a good deal of it park and Corps land. From this side of the lake you have open water in one direction for cruising and quiet creek arms in the other for fishing, which is an unusually good combination in one place.
The lake holds largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. It fishes well year round, and the winter drawdown concentrates fish in ways that reward knowing where the structure is.
Slips at Peninsula Marina
Covered slips
A covered slip keeps the boat in the water under a roof. Gelcoat, upholstery and canvas all last considerably longer out of direct sun, and rain does not fill the cockpit. Covered slips are the first to fill each season here as at every marina on the lake.
Open slips
Open slips cost less and suit boats that are covered anyway, or owners who are on the water often enough that sun exposure is not accumulating between trips.
Because the marina is small, the walk from the car park to the slip is short. That sounds like a trivial advantage until you are carrying a cooler, a bag, a tube and two children in July.
Fuel and the store
The fuel dock carries 100 percent ethanol free fuel with Primrose additives.
The reason for that specification is worth understanding. Pump gasoline in most of the country contains up to ten percent ethanol, and ethanol pulls water out of the air. A car burns through its tank in days so it never matters. A boat tank can sit half full for weeks, vented to humid air over a lake.
With enough absorbed water, the ethanol and water separate out of the gasoline and settle at the bottom of the tank, which is where the fuel pickup sits. Ethanol also acts as a solvent on older rubber fuel lines, gaskets and carburettor parts, and loosens tank deposits that then travel into the fuel system.
The store carries ice, cold drinks, snacks, sunscreen and the safety equipment required on board, along with the small things people realise they have forgotten on the way down to the dock.
Who uses Peninsula Marina
Glasgow is around fifteen minutes away, Bowling Green about forty, and Louisville is a straightforward run south. That catchment gives the marina a mix of local owners who are on the lake most weekends and Louisville families who come down for several days at a time.
Because most of the boats here belong to people who keep them here, the marina has the feel of somewhere people know each other rather than somewhere they pass through.
Boating in Kentucky
Kentucky requires a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat of ten horsepower or more if you were born on or after 1 January 1984. The course can be taken online.
Life jackets are required for everyone aboard, and children under twelve must wear one while a boat under twenty six feet is underway. Your boat also needs current Kentucky registration.

What is the difference between Peninsula and Barren River State Dock?
Both are on Barren River Lake and both are part of Rubright Marinas. The state dock sits inside the state resort park and handles boat rentals, so it is busier. Peninsula is smaller and quieter and focused on slip holders.
Are covered slips available?
Covered slips fill first every season. Call and ask what is currently open rather than assuming.
Do you sell fuel to anyone on the lake?
Yes. The fuel dock and the store are open whether or not you keep a boat here.
Does the lake level change much?
Yes. The Army Corps of Engineers draws Barren River Lake down through winter for flood capacity and refills it in spring. A slip removes most of the inconvenience of that, because the boat rises and falls with the dock.
Can I rent a boat here?
Rentals are handled at Barren River State Dock, which is also ours and on the same lake.
