Barren River State Dock, Barren River Lake

A marina inside a state resort park

Barren River State Dock joined Rubright Marinas in 2020 and it is the only marina in our group where renting a boat for the day is as common as keeping one here year round. It sits in Lucas, Kentucky, inside Barren River Lake State Resort Park.

That location changes the character of the place. A commercial marina is a car park, a dock and a store. This one sits inside a park with a lodge, cottages, a campground, a golf course and trails, which means a lot of the people coming through are here for a weekend rather than for an afternoon on the water.

Barren River Lake

Barren River Lake covers roughly 10,000 acres with about 140 miles of shoreline, formed by Barren River Dam and managed by the Army Corps of Engineers. Like the Cumberland River lakes to the south, it is drawn down through winter to hold flood capacity and brought back up in spring.

It is a quieter lake than Old Hickory, which is a large part of why people drive here from Bowling Green, Glasgow and Louisville rather than heading to something closer and busier. The shoreline is substantially undeveloped, much of it park and Corps land, so the views are trees rather than houses.

For fishing, the lake holds largemouth bass, white bass, crappie, bluegill and catfish. The creek arms and the timber fish differently to the main lake, and the seasonal level change moves fish around in ways that reward local knowledge. Ask at the dock.

Boat rentals

If you do not own a boat, or you are staying in the park for a weekend, renting is the straightforward answer. Rentals are the busiest part of this marina through summer, and weekends book out.

Pontoons

A pontoon is the right rental for a family group, a cooler and a slow afternoon. Stable, easy to move around on, and forgiving to drive if you have not operated a boat before. This is what most people should rent for a first outing.

Fishing boats

Smaller and more manoeuvrable, suited to working the coves and creek arms where the fishing is. Less comfortable for a group, considerably better if catching something is the point of the day.

Call ahead rather than turning up hoping, particularly between Memorial Day and Labor Day. Rental availability is the single most common reason people phone this marina, and the answer on a July Saturday is frequently that everything went a week ago.

What you need before you rent in Kentucky

Kentucky requires a boating safety certificate to operate a motorboat of ten horsepower or more if you were born on or after 1 January 1984. Rental operators check this, so bring identification and be ready to show the certificate.

If you have never operated a boat, say so when you book. The staff would far rather spend ten minutes explaining how the boat handles, where the no wake zones are, and what the weather is expected to do than deal with the alternative.

Life jackets are required for every person aboard, and children under twelve must wear one on a boat under twenty six feet while it is underway.

Slips and storage for owners

For people who keep a boat rather than rent one, the dock offers slips with direct access to open water. The park setting means the surroundings are better maintained than a typical commercial dock, and the amenities of the resort park are there whether you use them or not.

That suits a particular kind of owner: somebody who treats the boat as part of a weekend that also involves a lodge room, a round of golf and dinner, rather than as the entire reason for the trip.

Fuel and supplies

The fuel dock carries 100 percent ethanol free fuel with Primrose additives, the same specification as every marina in the group.

Ethanol free matters on any marine engine and it matters more on rental engines. Pump gasoline contains up to ten percent ethanol, and ethanol absorbs water from the air. In a boat tank that sits between uses, that water eventually separates out with the ethanol and settles at the bottom of the tank where the fuel pickup is.

Ethanol also attacks older rubber fuel lines and carburettor components, and it loosens deposits inside tanks that then travel into the fuel system. On a fleet of engines that get used hard by a lot of different operators, avoiding all of that is not a luxury.

The store stocks ice, cold drinks, snacks, sunscreen and the safety equipment required on board.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a boating licence to rent?

Kentucky requires boater education for operators born on or after 1 January 1984 on motorboats of ten horsepower or more. Bring identification and your certificate.

How far in advance should I book a rental?

For a summer weekend, as far ahead as you can manage. Midweek and shoulder season are usually available at much shorter notice.

Is there anywhere to stay?

The marina is inside Barren River Lake State Resort Park, which has a lodge, cottages and a campground. Those are booked through the park rather than through us.

Can I keep a boat here year round?

Yes. Call to ask what is open for the coming season, since availability changes as boats come and go.

What is the difference between here and Peninsula Marina?

Both are ours and both are on Barren River Lake. This one sits inside the state resort park and handles rentals. Peninsula is smaller and quieter, and it is focused on slip holders rather than day visitors.
